on repressions and visual presences in the phenomenology of Frank Ankersmit (2001-2012)

The text investigates some of the treatments given to visual images in Frank Ankersmit's work from the 1990s onwards, following how he developed a dialogue with visuality in his phenomenological phase. The analysis investigates the Ankersmit's writings, images fulfilled functions that were sometimes paradoxical, as the final work of the Dutchman moved between: rejecting a certain conception of the historical text as a window; and approach the historical experience as a visual experience. The text demonstrates Ankersmit's sui generis position and the conflict between textualist theory, marked by strong repression of images, and the enhancement of the visual before and when he enters the horizon of the presence of the past.
