The article analyzes how Tom Jones, a work by Henry Fielding published in 1749, addresses central themes of 18th-century literate culture by examining the differences between historical, biographical, and fictional writings, as well as theater. Focusing on the introductory chapters of the text and its reception at the time, the study explores the repertoire used by critics in the context of the rise of the novel, highlighting discussions about the literary genres prevailing in the English literary field of the 18th century. The study also emphasizes how the notion of performance supported connections between the book form and theatrical acting, considering the establishment of the modern concept of authorship.
