Abstract: This article, inspired by Roger Chartier’s call to “listen to the dead with one’s eyes,” seeks to revisit the historiographical and philosophical contributions of Étienne Souriau, a thinker whose work remains marginal to Brazilian philosophical and historiographical traditions. Focusing on L'instauration philosophique (1939), the article reconstructs Souriau’s central investigation into how philosophy is constituted and develops historically. It then presents Souriau’s concept of pleroma — a pluralistic cosmos of philosophical worlds — which challenges linear and teleological narratives of philosophical progress, emphasizing instead the collective and trans-historical construction of thought through philosophical works. Finally, it is demonstrated that, by integrating reason with historical diversity and proposing that philosophy be reduced to a collection of monuments, Souriau provided the conceptual scope for Gueroult’s structuralism, while simultaneously demystifying some of the recurrent criticisms of structuralism in the history of philosophy within the Brazilian tradition.
