Abstract

This essay explores how the relationship between historiography and fiction can contribute to the theory of history. To this end, the novel Jan Karski (2009) by Yannick Haenel will be discussed, with particular emphasis on the reactions of certain historians, especially Jean-Louis Panné. His reaction to Haenel's fictional narrative provides insight into the relationship between history and fiction, which will be contrasted with an interpretation of the novel Jan Karski. The essay draws on the reflections of historian Michel de Certeau, particularly on the writing of history and its relation to fiction. The aim is to demonstrate how specific historical fiction can enhance theoretical reflection on history by differentiating the concept of truth within fiction from that within historiography. Furthermore, it proposes definitions for terms such as historicity, the process of historicization, and otherness within the context of historical writing.
