Abstract

This article revisits the work of French thinker Michel de Certeau based on the metaphorology developed by German thinker Hans Blumenberg. Its central argument is to explore the metaphorical dimension of everyday doing - thematized by de Certeau above all in The Invention of Everyday Life I - the arts of doing (1980) - by bringing it closer to what Blumenberg calls absolute metaphor. The idea is to rethink the creative potential of culture, extending the imaginative openness provided by absolute metaphors to everyday practices. To do this, we establish the notion of culture that guides Certeau's thinking and the notion of absolute metaphor, central to Hans Blumenberg's metaphorology, in order to revisit everyday making from an aesthetic and ethical point of view. Central to this argument is the Kantian influence that stands out in the work of both authors. The article also offers an interpretation of Michel de Certeau's use of metaphors in his Invention.
