Abstract

The objective of this article is to present the traces of a philosophy of history in the thought of Friedrich Kittler based on the guiding thread of the idea of the disappearance of man. To this end, we will investigate its media archeology in order to demonstrate how the emergence of the modern subject is the result of a certain historical arrangement of technologies of production (processing), diffusion (transmission) and archiving (storage) of information, that is, of a registration system, established at the turn of the 18th century to the 19th century. The hypothesis of the disappearance of man arises when technical conditions fundamentally change, on the one hand, with the mechanization of inscription practices (with the typewriter, the gramophone and the cinematographic camera) and, on the other, with the digitalization processes of second half of the 20th century.
